Soon after IBM announced a raft of exciting new products, with Opteron RevF and Intel Woodcrest, we have our first win of a 48-CPU Opteron cluster, 32GB RAM per server, with Voltaire HTX IB adapters (1.6uS latency), Voltaire IB switch and Linux x86_64. The cluster uses IBM x3755 4-socket, dual core AMD Opterons.
Jun-2006: IBM Blade cluster

We will provide installation and support services for an IBM BladeCenter cluster running a commercial application for a major Multinational firm. Configuration includes LS20 blades with 16GB RAM, dual-dualcore Opterons, IBM xCAT, GPFS and IBM Director software, on top of RHEL 4.x x86_64 OS

NTU-SBS: We have won a tender to reinstall and reconfigure one cluster from the existing 32-bit RH9 (Sun v20z and HP DL145 Opteron servers, about 40CPUs) with IBM xCAT and Linux x86_64 OS, apps and HPC libraries. This reinstall will provide 64-bit OS with 32-bit code execution capability.

SMA-NUS: We have won a tender to reinstall and reconfigure three clusters (two x86 IBM 70 CPU and one HP Itanium2 60 CPU) with IBM xCAT and RHEL derived Linux OS, apps and HPC libraries. This reinstall will solve many problems as well as provide stable, secure and reliable clusters for SMA.

Novartis Institute of Tropical Diseases: Drug Discovery IT Infrastructure
With excellent support from IBM, we have won the project for setting up the IT facility for Drug Research for solving major tropical illnesses.

The facility will comprise of the following Hardware/Software:

  • x365 server: Intel XeonMP, 32-bit Linux, Oracle, Apache, Tomcat and othe BioIT apps
  • Four node, eight CPU Opteron Cluster: 64-bit Linux for AMD64 and other BioInf Apps
  • Foundry high performance switch
  • High-end Graphics workstations IBM Z-Pro: Dual boot, WinXP and Linux with a suite of Drug Discovery programs.

We will be commissioning an IBM x345 based 10-node (20 CPU Intel Xeon 3.06GHz DP) Cluster. The OS is Linux 32-bit, IBM xCAT cluster toolkit, Mathworks MATLAB and Accelrys Materials Studio will be the primary cluster applications, apart from MPI based custom code. The work is expected to start after ICES moves to Jurong Island.

The cluster comprises of 32 compute nodes, storage/management nodes, with gigabit interconnect. The hardware is from IBM (x345, x335), Cisco switches, APC UPS. The processors are Intel Xeon 3GHz.

Software: RedHat Linux 8, IBM CSM (Cluster System Management), MPI, optimised BLAS libs etc.

Singapore Polytechnic BioCluster
NovaGlobal provided technical configuration, pre-sales for four 4-way IBM x445 2.8GHz XeonMP cluster, possibly Asia’s first. The cluster utilises IBM’s innovative design and Summit chipset to scale the IA32 MP system to 16 SMP system. This project has made it into IBM sales literature as an unique achievement. IBM directly executed this project.

China National Grid Project
NovaGlobal provided Quadrics interconnect consulting, installation for the 5TeraFlop cluster and solving technical problems hindering the performance. The project consists of 256node (1024 CPU) Itanium2-Quadrics-Linux (Intel IA64) cluster. Partnering with Legend Computer of Beijing (Lenovo, now), for the CNIC-Computer Network Information Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This project is part of China National Grid. The Linpack efficiency topped 82%, you can see this cluster listed at #12 on the 2003 Top500 List

NovaGlobal commissioned Singapore’s first Bioinformatics Supercomputing Cluster at IMCB (Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology)

NovaGlobal has played a crucial role in commissioning Singapore’s first Bioinformatics Supercomputing Cluster

The cluster is housed in the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, National University of Singapore. Phase I of the cluster, comprising over twenty high performance 64-bit UNIX servers and a SAN storage subsystem with 500GB of storage, was commissioned on 5 May 2001, having passed the entire suite of User Acceptance Tests with flying colours at least week ahead of time.

Phase II of the cluster was successfully commissioned on 17 July 2001, again ahead of the expected August deadline. This phase saw an addition of 50 servers plus another 1.5TB of storage for a total of more than 70 servers, some of them in VLM (Very Large Memory) and/or high-availablity configuration, and 2TB of storage.

All hardware and system software for the cluster were provided by a Fortune 100 company. NovaGlobal was engaged as the system integrator to deliver a complete turnkey solution to the end customer. Besides the usual systems setup, NovaGlobal installed clustering software like PVM, MPI and LSF and Bioinformatics software like Blast and Ensembl, and ensure that all these software are integrated seamlessly within the cluster. What made the project even more challenging was the fact the that cluster operates on a a commercial UNIX – where most of the clustering and bioinformatics software had to be built from (at times patchy) source, rather than Linux, the preferred OS for Beowulf clusters, and for which pre-packaged clustering solutions abound.

In August 2001 NovaGlobal deployed Singapore’s first cluster of high-end workstations based on the new AthlonMP processor from AMD. Press Release by AMD

Beowulf Clusters

Note: The cluster was installed at the Department of Computational Science, National University of Singapore. While NovaGlobal as a company was not directly involved in any way in the cluster, our technical staff comprised about two thirds of the team that proposed, implemented, and deployed the cluster.

The cluster comprised 16 Pentium-Pro nodes each running at 200MHz and equipped with 64MB of RAM and dual fast ethernet controllers. The OS was Redhat Linux 5.0. It was used mainly for running PVM/MPI type jobs. In early 2000 the cluster was decommissioned in favour of NovaGlobal’s high performance AlphaStorm workstations each equipped with two 667MHz Alpha 21264 ev67 processors and 2 / 4GB of memory, and with each workstation providing about the same sustained useable computing power as the entire Beowulf cluster.

Novartis Institute of Tropical Diseases: Drug Discovery IT Infrastructure
With excellent support from IBM, we have won the project for setting up the IT facility for Drug Research for solving major tropical illnesses.

The facility will comprise of the following Hardware/Software:

  • x365 server: Intel XeonMP, 32-bit Linux, Oracle, Apache, Tomcat and othe BioIT apps
  • Four node, eight CPU Opteron Cluster: 64-bit Linux for AMD64 and other BioInf Apps
  • Foundry high performance switch
  • High-end Graphics workstations IBM Z-Pro: Dual boot, WinXP and Linux with a suite of Drug Discovery programs.

Republic Polytechnic: Bio-Informatics Server
We have won the BioInformatics server project from RP.

Hardware: IBM p630 Quad 64bit CPU POWER4+ 1.45GHz, 8GB RAM, 450GB RAID storage.

Software: AIX 5.2, Accelrys GCG Wisconsin and a suite of Open Source Applications Singapore Poly Dual Opteron Server

We have been awarded the Dual Opteron 2.0GHz server for School of E&E. Dual Boot (Windows and Linux-64), will be used for Biomedical instrumentation development.

ICES, A-STAR: IBM p630 Quad CPU (POWER4+ 1.45GHz), AIX v5.2 (64bit UNIX-OS)

We will commission the system during this month. The end user applications are Fluent CFD software and Matlab apart from several Computational Chemistry applications. We work with CSA on this project.

We have commissioned the Intel Dual Xeon 3.06GHz/1MB L3 CPU based, nVidia Quadro FX1000 dual DVI adapter, Creative Audigy2, Windows XP-Pro with Sony 21″ display system for high end Graphics design work.

ICES/ASTAR: SGI Indigo2 / IRIX Setup

Completed setting up SGI Indigo2 / IRIX system with Fluent and Matlab applications. NovaGlobal is proud to have played a part in NIE BioLab.

NIE BioLab was launched on 23-Sep-2003. Press Release (pdf 24.28 Kb). NovaGlobal was responsible for integrating all the systems. viz.,the Bio-workstation software, installing GCG Wisconsin on the p660 server, linking up the wetlab equipment with the server. The lab sports 24 Linux workstations and a p660 64bit IBM server, along with several wetlab equipment.

We have won the tender for Four IBM x445 servers to be used as Oracle DB and Webservers (MS Windows 2000 Servers) for an e-learning application. NovaGlobal role is to commission the hardware while ISS staff will configure the systems software & applications.

  • Deployed 2 Dell Precision 360 Linux Workstations for Bio-informatics related applications. P4-3GHz/800MHz FSB, 1GB RAM, 120GB SATA, RedHat Linux Prof 9, kernel 2.4.22-pre2.
  • Deployed IBM ZPro Dual 3GHz Win2003 Server for embedded chip design

Installed EpicStorm4 Quad Intel Itanium2 McKinley system running RedHat Linux AS 2.1 for IA64. The system runs custom code as well as VASP. Upgraded to Quad Madison 1.5GHz processors successfully.

Participated in ChemBio tech’08 conference on 19th Dec and 20th Dec 2008 in the Faculty of Engineering, NUS with a booth set up to provide more information on our Accelrys products.

(Dec 9)
A training session on Accelrys Discovery Studio 2.1 (Access all the tools you need for Life Sciences Discovery in One Place) was conducted by our applications engineer for computational sciences, Vimala Selvaraj, at the NUS computer centre.
